Teaching English and Technology: TPACK in the Classroom

The work is a part of a handbook entitled “The Routledge International Handbook of English Language Education in Indonesia.” This handbook is a landmark volume offering an unparalleled exploration of English language education in the world’s largest archipelagic nation. Home to over 17,000 islands and more than 600 ethnolinguistic groups, Indonesia has an extraordinary linguistic and cultural diversity making up a unique context for English language education. With the growing prominence of Indonesia’s superdiversity, this comprehensive resource on English language education in the country is timely.

This handbook assembles cutting-edge research reviews from a diverse group of contributors, both Indonesian and international. It investigates key themes across six major areas: history and policy; curriculum and assessment; pedagogy; teacher education; English in the education system; and innovative approaches to the English language, teaching, and research. With perspectives ranging from historical and sociolinguistic to pedagogical and ideological, the chapters provide a multidimensional understanding of the complexities and opportunities shaping English language education in Indonesia.

An essential resource for academics, policymakers, teachers, and students, this volume not only captures the dynamism of English education in Indonesia but also charts pathways for future scholarship, practice, and policymaking. It serves as a critical reference for anyone seeking to understand and contribute to the evolving landscape of English language education in the nation.

Chapter 26 showcases our work that specifically discusses “Teaching English with Technology” from the perspective of a technology integration framework, called TPACK. This chapter covers a critical review of the interrelationships between English language teaching and technology within the framework of Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK), emphasizing the learning context in Indonesia. It examines the increased utilization of technology in English language teaching (ELT) and highlights its emerging research on technology use in the classrooms. Five central themes are identified as crucial in the discourse on teaching English with technology: teachers’ perceptions toward TPACK, their understanding of TPACK, their ability with technology integration, practical implementation of TPACK, and contextual considerations. These themes provide significant insights into the utilization of TPACK and its implications for ELT in the Indonesian context. The review highlights the necessity for ongoing professional development and deeper integration of technological tools in ELT, aiming to enhance both current and future educational processes. This chapter not only enriches the existing body of knowledge on TPACK’s implications for ELT but also projects future directions for enhancing pedagogical practices through strategic technology use, aiming to inform both current and future educational processes in Indonesia and similar multilingual settings.
