A friend buzzed me on yahoo messenger. He is an exchange student taking a 6-month-exchange program in this institution I currently study.

“Hi Bli*, do you want to come with me and watch Dream Theater?”

I know Dream Theater from an album, Images and Words (1992). One of particular songs that I could remember is “Pull Me Under.”

“Oh, what a surprise! Are they coming to this town?” I asked.

“Yes, I know you like them and the drummer. Don’t you want to see Portnoy?” He teased me.
(Portnoy was the the drummer – now replaced by Mike Mangini since 2011. He has been one of the founding members of Dream Theater in 1985, together with Petrucci, the guitarist and Myung, the bassist).

“Well, of course I do. If I could make it, I’ll join you,” I said.

“Alright, I’ll look for the ticket,” he replied, and that was the time when seeing Dream Theater would come to reality.

I first listened to the Images and Words album from a cassette I borrowed from my school friend around 17 years ago. That time, I liked listening to Helloween and was amazed by Kiske’s vocal range of high notes (Later, Kiske departed from the band, continued on singing in some solo and collaborated projects, such as Avantasia – a Metal Opera project by Tobias Sammet, Edguy’s front man with several well-noted vocalists in the metal scene, Kiske/Somerville – a project by Amanda Somerville, and the latest, Unisonic – with Kai Hansen, the founding member of Helloween, now in Gamma Ray). I found Dream Theatre was similar to Helloween that time. Well, to admit they are more into progressive type, actually. That time, I didn’t know much about different genres :). I was like more interested in the band’s musical abilities. Individually, they are very skilful and I saw it the same that night.

During the concert, Myung played his bass superbly while Petrucci shredded his guitar with difficult composition. Portnoy, as usual, hit all those cymbals and snares combined with powerful double bass. Rudess, sometimes went out from his keyboard station with his portable key, played excellently. He played some compositions using an iPhone app for keyboard, too! LeBrie, accompanied those skilful instruments with his great voice – though as characterized in most their songs, he had to allow long instrument solos taking place in the songs.

Well, here it is, some photos taken during their concert. They are not of good quality because as in many other concerts, professional cameras were not allowed. Hope you enjoy this 🙂
